Volunteers are critical to our mission
We can’t do it alone! Millions of pounds of food pass through the Food Bank each year. This food must be inspected, sorted and packaged before it can be delivered to our hunger relief network. When you volunteer your time at the Food Bank, you are doing so much more than just sorting and boxing food for distribution. The food you prepare will stock the shelves of a neighborhood pantry and eventually ease the worry of someone facing hunger in their home.

For more information about how you can volunteer contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Brooke Summers.

The Impact of Volunteers
Volunteer experiences are available at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan year-round, Monday-Saturday. We accommodate everyone ranging from individuals to large groups from businesses and community organizations interested in giving back to the community. Each year, nearly 7,000 people volunteer at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. In just one hour, a single volunteer sorts enough food to feed 355 people!

Volunteers ask these questions the most.
We have several projects that we dedicate our time to.
Some of these include:
- Processing/sorting retail store donations
- Repackaging bulk donations,
- Assembling senior boxes (CSFP)
- Repacking fresh fruits and vegetables
- Execute general cleaning tasks
Please give us a call if you have any questions about what projects we are working on.
Our volunteering is done inside of a warehouse, so temperatures inside the warehouse often reflect the temperature outside. Please plan accordingly.
For your safety, please AVOID the following:
- Crocs, sandals, slippers, slides, house shoes, foam shoes, heels, or cloth shoes
- Pants or shirts with holes in them
- Offensive slogans or imagery on clothing
- Dangling jewelry, accessories, etc.
- Headphones or earbuds once on the warehouse floor
*Please keep expensive jewelry, items, or accessories at home as we cannot be responsible for stolen, lost, or damaged items.
Absolutely! We allow community service hours to be completed Monday-Friday from 8:30am until 4:30pm. Please make sure to bring all the paperwork you need signed. We do provide letterheads for completed service hours.
We ask that groups commit to at least 2 hours of volunteering at a time. This means showing up before your scheduled shift so that we are ready to begin volunteering at the scheduled time.
We are open Monday-Friday from 8:30am until 4:30pm.
We do have some Saturdays and late nights available for larger groups, but these must be scheduled ahead of time.
We love having groups volunteer with us! We can fit up to 100 volunteers at a time in the warehouse, so please call to schedule groups larger than 4 people at a time. Any volunteer under 18 should be accompanied by an adult, and we will have them fill out an emergency contact form before they begin volunteering. At this time, for the safety of everyone involved, as ask that we do not have any volunteers younger than 6 at this time.
Absolutely! We have a volunteer breakroom that can seat up to 60 guests. For groups that are larger, we recommend booking a space in our community room that can fit over 100 guests at a time. In our volunteer breakroom there are drink and snack machines for use. We have volunteers bring outside catering in to feed larger groups all the time. If you need additional space or want to discuss catering done through our kitchen, just give us a call.
Please make sure that all spaces are returned to their original state and kept clean and tidy.
